This monthly roundup is best read in a browser.
Welcome to May’s Neurodiversity Newsletter. Pete Wharmby has done an excellent job of putting into words what many are feeling as we leave behind Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month.
If you’re here for the resource and events listings included in this newsletter, you can also find them individually to aid navigation and reduce overwhelm:
Win a lifetime subscription or one of ten month-long subscriptions to the Supporter tier!
This newsletter has a mission to make neurodivergent-affirming information easily accessible to neurodivergent people, families and professionals.
I’m grateful to the readers who’ve upgraded to the paid supporter tier which makes it possible for me to spend the time compiling resources, training and event listings for this monthly roundup.
Supporters receive exclusive articles, including the ‘Spotlight on…’ series which showcases concepts and neurodivergent individuals who are working to make life better for ND people.
Recent pieces include:
A Neurodivergent Introduction to Diversifying Your Self-Care ebook

Every Thursday I share a new page of the week on Facebook. They’re pages in the broad field of psychology that I find interesting and worth following. These have been featured since my last newsletter:
Munira - Children’s Occupational Therapist
Munira supports families with sensory processing, emotional wellbeing, and coordination. Occupational therapists help people to perform different tasks. Munira has a strong focus on neurodivergence so her page shares lots of content of relevance to ND families, particularly from an OT perspective and sensory nature. She also offers support to thousands of parents and carers in her Helping Kids Write group.
Stimpunks
Stimpunks a non-profit collective of neurodivergent and disabled people offering mutual aid and human-centered learning. The collective celebrate interdependence instead of independence, and spend their time coordinating support; educating; hosting events; and documenting neurodivergent and disabled culture.
Their members are autistic, ADHD, OCD, PTSD, Tourettes, schizophrenic, bipolar, apraxic, dyslexic, dyspraxic, dyscalculic, non-speaking, and more. The Stimpunks Facebook page shares some of their website content (the site itself is absolutely packed with information), and glossary updates with new terms defined in affirming and liberatory ways.
Hvppyhands
Hyppyhands is an autistic, non-binary, intersex parent, advocate and artist from Canada. They promote disability justice and cover a broad range of experiences, from parenting disabled children, to hypermobility, children's rights and training as an educator. Most recently they have been highlighting the damage Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) has done to autistic people, including their own daughter, and supporting alternative therapies that don't seek to erase autistic ways of being.
Swarit Gopalan - My truisms unfiltered
Swarit is an autistic and apraxic, teenage, non-speaking poet and advocate from Florida. Apraxia is a neurodivergence which impacts speech and motor control, and means Swarit's body isn't always able to do what his mind tells it. He communicates through a letterboard and keyboard. Swarit aims to change the narrative from pity and sympathy to allyship and understanding.
Throughout April, Swarit ran a 'Questioning Ableism' series of reflective prompts to encourage people to think about the way they view non-speakers. He shares a lot of his poetry, as well as his experiences and observations on autonomy and agency, and the importance of finding a reliable method of communication for each non-speaker.
Please note these are all live online events and as such I am unable to verify or endorse content. Times are UK time - convert here. Please confirm details before booking.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has taken the time to vote for me in the National Diversity Awards’ Positive Role Model Award for Disability category.
The kind words left by many of you in support of my nomination have been extremely moving. There can be a lot of negativity directed at those of us taking an affirming stance towards neurodivergence, so it’s a massive boost to hear the positive impact this newsletter and my other resources are having.
You can support as many people and groups as you like in the awards and voting is a quick process. Remember to click on the email confirmation afterwards to make sure your vote counts.
