This monthly roundup is best read in a browser.
Welcome to July’s Neurodiversity Newsletter.
If you’re here for the resource and events listings included in this newsletter, you can also find them individually to aid navigation and reduce overwhelm:
Glimmers can be thought of as the opposite of triggers. Instead of heralding unpleasant thoughts, feelings, and traumatic memories, they bring joy.
Deb Dana first used the term to describe “micro-moments of regulation that foster feelings of well-being.” Occupational therapist Bec Secombes went further, categorising them as “a satisfying sensory delight that fills someone with fervent ecstasy.” Glimmers can be anything, and they’re unique to every individual. A glimmer to someone may be unpleasant or even a trigger to someone else.
It was a pleasure to collaborate with Teo Byrne of
on this ebook which is designed to help neurodivergent adults and teenagers explore and embrace their glimmers in a way that feels safe. It’s suitable for use at home, but therapists have already begun using the book to support their clients too.If you’d like access to all my resources then you can subscribe annually to my Substack Supporter tier receive everything as it’s published, or choose the £5 per month option. Every Thursday I share a new page of the week on Facebook. They’re pages in the broad field of psychology that I find interesting and worth following. These have been featured since my last newsletter:
Speech Dude
Chris Wenger is a neurodiversity-affirming speech therapist from California. He produces lots of accessible but informative reels about speech therapy and autistic and ADHD experiences. This has gained him a huge following on TikTok, but his Facebook page shares them too for those who aren't on that platform. Chris supports other speech therapists to target a positive self-identity; allow autistic students to be their true authentic self; and aim for long-term happiness. If you like information in a quick, video-based format then this is a great page to follow.
The Autistic Advocate
Kieran Rose is an Autistic consultant, academic researcher, author, trainer and international speaker. He uses Facebook to share his new articles, webinars and training. I've been surprised how many people I've spoken to recently hadn't heard of Kieran, as his work has been so fundamental to my understanding of Autistic culture and what it means to be Autistic, and his blog has reached millions of people. Kieran focuses on advocating for the rights of all Autistic people, combating damaging narratives and standing against the injustice and rights violations that are still so common. He is the Autistic Rights, Identity & Research Lead for the International Coalition Against Restraint And Seclusion. He offers training for professionals, parents and Autistic people, which you can find on his website.
Bri Guerra, Nonspeaking Advocate for Change
Bri began communicating through typing in 2021. She campaigns against the way non-speakers are treated as burdens and labelled as "profound" or "severe", meaning "something to deride and fear, pity and control." Bri shares about the pain of her experiences and the way she was treated before she could reliably communicate. She challenges neuronormativity and urges a shift from trying to "fix" disabled people to accepting and including, and valuing non-speakers as fully human.
A Cup Full of Spoons
This page is run by Erin from Brisbane in Australia. She focuses on chronic illness and neurodivergent information and support, and her own lived experience. Erin explains things in a clear way that is likely to be accessible to many, whether they experience chronic illness themselves or know someone who does. She aims to build a sense of community on her page so that people can feel less alone and more connected with others in similar circumstances.
